This article discusses a study done by Tanvi Shah and Titiksha Pol on depression and anxiety found in college students. They administered three questionnaires (a self-made one, Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI)) to 400 college students from the ages 18-25. Key Terms:

Depression: A group of conditions associated with the elevation or lowering of a person's mood

Anxiety: Intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations

Both these mental illnesses are crucial to my topic because that is what I am researching about. The study done in this article is to find how common depression and anxiety is in college students.

Quotes:

"parental expectations, perceived rejection by peers, parents, and teachers, academic excellence pressure, fear of failure, lack of supportive environment in the university, favoritism, relationships, unmatched deadlines predict increase in depressive symptoms" (Shah 12).

"Lifestyle is another important issue, as factors indicative of the adoption of nontraditional lifestyle are associated with an increase in the prevalence of depression" (Shah 12).

"Depression, anxiety, stress, and substance abuse are mere symptoms of the hidden, unresolved, and ignored emotional issues which cumulatively grow inside insidiously" (Shah 12).

"There are some students that require help in facing these problems but are not diagnosed until it becomes extremely severe. This can many times have a potentially dangerous outcome" (Shah 12).

Value:

This article can give a good representation of how prevalent anxiety and depression is found in college students. I can use the statistics from the study to show how big of a problem mental health is for college students. This article also lists several factors that are related to becoming depresssed.
